1 day agoColombia says nine miners dead after explosion
An explosion in a Colombian coal mine resulted in nine fatalities and six rescues, attributed to a buildup of dangerous gases.
As a child, Ed Alcock listened to the story of his great uncle Kendon's death at the age of 17. It happened at the bottom of the mine, his mother, Sheila, told him one day. He had been working there since he left school. A section of the gallery sank and a heavy crane fell on him, crushing him and causing head injuries. They took his body out of the mine, but he never regained consciousness.
Searchers have found a missing Queensland coalmine worker dead a day after he became trapped in a roof collapse. The man was inside the Curragh mine in central Queensland when the collapse happened about 3pm on Friday. There were fears he was as deep as 1km underground. One worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked through the night to stabilise the site and access the second individual.
