I'm giddy to crack this untamable classic open with the razor-sharp Luke Evans at the center. And I hope to do at Studio 54 what The Rocky Horror Show has done for people around the world for decades - open a dimension to another possible reality.
Released today, October 10th, via Ode Records, the 50th anniversary vinyl edition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is pressed on 180-gram red-in-gold vinyl and comes housed in a heavyweight gold-foil jacket with a newly designed inner sleeve. The album package features never-before-seen photos and production diary excerpts from producer Richard Hartley. It's available for purchase on Amazon and through Record Store Day.
Given its provenance, it's no surprise that no one here says, as they do in the rival documentary, that the 1975 film adaptation is a shitty fucking movie but nevertheless there's honesty on display, mostly about the slapdash origins of the project and the later mistakes made, including the huge flop when the original stage production tried to transfer from Los Angeles to Broadway.
As well as cast members like Little Nell and Barry Bostwick, the talking heads here include original-stage-version actors, fans, and producers, one of whom really nails why Rocky is such a delight: Rocky was an accident. You can't try to have an accident. This gets to the heart of why this particular phenomenon is special and why so many imitators and projects conceived with the intention of being cult entertainment are doomed to fail
