Transport workers in London face daily violence and harassment, prompting calls for better protection and specific legal measures against assaults.
Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, stated that the priorities showed the agency was in danger of being a dead duck before it even begins. For too long, workers have borne the brunt of disreputable employers who have had carte blanche.
The level of violence on Southern and Gatwick Express services and stations has reached a crisis point and is totally unacceptable. Our members are being assaulted, threatened and abused at work and the company is not doing enough to stop it.
We allege that these defendants operated a business that profited by systematically underpaying their employees, denying them basic protections, and exposing them to hazardous and degrading conditions. These serious charges send a strong message that this kind of exploitation will not be tolerated in Brooklyn, and we will continue to use every available tool to hold unscrupulous employers accountable and seek restitution for workers.
