Asking Eric: We want to stay friendly with the new neighbor. What can we do about the ruckus?
Briefly

A neighbor's rooster crows at 5:20 a.m., disrupting nearby residents' sleep, particularly affecting retirees who enjoy sleeping with open windows. Despite receiving eggs as a peace offering, they hesitate to complain. Engaging the neighbor about the rooster can be beneficial; it may not bother him. Suggested solutions include making the coop lightproof or using a rooster collar to mitigate the crowing. These methods, however, may vary in effectiveness and humaneness.
Though the gift of eggs was nice, with that early a daily wake-up call, I hope your new neighbor is prepping a full breakfast spread for you.
Start with a question: This is what we're experiencing; do you know of any ways that you can get the rooster to crow a little later in the day?
If your neighbor makes the rooster's coop completely lightproof and lets the rooster out a little later in the morning, it could have the desired result.
There's also something called a rooster collar that can discourage crowing when worn, but after speaking with a variety of backyard chicken owners, I've found opinions are mixed about the humaneness.
