Britain just launched its top supercomputer. Here's how it ranks globally
Briefly

Isambard-AI, stationed at the University of Bristol, has launched with a computing power of 216.5 petaflops using HPE's Cray EX architecture and NVIDIA Grace Hopper superchips. It surpasses the UK's second-fastest supercomputer, Njoerd, by over ten times. Funded by $300 million from the government, Isambard-AI is suited for complex AI and scientific tasks like protein structure modeling and climate simulations. Though significant for the UK, it ranks below global leaders El Capitan, Frontier, and Aurora, all exceeding 1,000 petaflops.
Isambard-AI, hosted at the University of Bristol, officially went live this week. The machine was built by Hewlett-Packard Enterprises (HPE) using its Cray EX architecture and fitted with over 5400 NVIDIA Grace Hopper superchips.
With a raw computing power measured at 216.5 petaflops, Isambard-AI is more than 10x faster than the UK's next-fastest supercomputer - the Njoerd supercluster in London.
