"a sustained and ever-deepening relationship with the natural world"
"approaches the social and ecological consequences of India's rapid urbanisation from the vantage of non-figurative art"
India returns to the Venice Biennale after a seven-year absence with a pavilion presentation in the Arsenale running 9 May–22 November. Amin Jaffer, a Rwanda-born Indian scholar, curated the exhibition titled Geographies of Distance: Remembering Home, centered on homeland connections for Indians abroad. Five artists—Alwar Balasubramaniam (Bala), Sumakshi Singh, Ranjani Shettar, Asim Waqif and Skarma Sonam Tashi—draw on millennia-spanning material culture and organic Indian materials. Works range from embroidered-thread installations and recycled-material sculptures to ecology-focused non-figurative pieces and architecture-informed sustainability projects. Jaffer has prior curatorial roles at the Victoria and Albert Museum and directs the Al Thani Collection.
