Germany defender Sule to retire this summer aged 30
"When I went for the MRI the next day and received the good news [that it was not a cruciate ligament tear], it was 1,000% clear to me that it was over. I couldn't imagine anything worse than actually looking forward to the time afterward - being independent, going on vacation, spending time with my children - but then having to process my third cruciate ligament tear."
"In that moment, I really thought: 'It's torn'. After initial tests on his knee, Sule said he went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes, reflecting the emotional impact of the injury scare that ultimately led to his retirement decision."
Niklas Sule, a 30-year-old Germany defender, has decided to retire this summer following a knee injury sustained during Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim. Initially fearing a third cruciate ligament tear, Sule discovered through MRI testing that he had avoided this injury. However, the prospect of potentially suffering another serious knee injury prompted his retirement decision. With his contract expiring on 30 June, Sule will conclude his career after the final game of the season. The former Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim player won five Bundesliga titles, the 2020 Champions League, and earned 49 caps for Germany across two World Cups.
