A 23-year-old Nigerian college graduate named Yosoye begins national service at an architectural firm in Lagos and tries to overcome an inward, isolating feeling. After moving into a one-room apartment, she goes to a local bar, meets a man, and ends up in a cheap motel where she has sex. She discovers she is pregnant, but the timing is complicated by a disturbing pattern in the city: pregnant women are walking into the ocean, jumping into lagoons, and drowning as if compelled to become one with water. The same city includes a major building project, Omi City, intended for wealthy residents on reclaimed land, while Yosoye’s workplace produces promotional materials amid the growing menace.
