Jakhi Lodgson-McCray, aged 21, was accused of setting fire to 11 NYPD vehicles in a Bushwick parking lot, causing damages over $800,000. After his arraignment on federal charges, he was released on house arrest but was immediately re-arrested by NYPD for an unrelated misdemeanor charge. McCray allegedly committed the arson to disrupt police response to protests. Court documents reveal evidence linking him to the crime, including recovered sunglasses matching his fingerprints. Federal authorities emphasize that such acts undermine public safety and will be prosecuted vigorously.
The man accused of setting fire to 11 NYPD vehicles in a Bushwick parking lot last month was released after his arraignment on federal charges on Monday - and promptly re-arrested, this time by NYPD officers, for a separate misdemeanor charge.
McCray was sought by law enforcement since June 12, when he allegedly scaled the fence of a police parking lot on DeKalb Avenue and set several vehicles ablaze.
Prosecutors allege that McCray caused over $800,000 in damages in an effort to prevent police response to a protest that weekend.
United States Attorney Joseph Nocella stated, "Setting police vehicles ablaze is not a form of protest - it is a federal crime."
