'A stab in the heart'; Beloved peacocks reported stolen from historic California hotel
Briefly

The Ryde Hotel has reported the disappearance of numerous peacocks, with only four remaining on the grounds after two men were seen capturing one. Hotel staff express distress over their missing residents, with management fearing they may be used for illegal fighting, the exotic animal trade, or even consumption. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the theft, categorizing it as a felony due to the high value of the peacocks, estimated at $2,000 for males and $1,000 for females.
The Ryde Hotel staff are desperately missing their favorite occupants - the gorgeous peacocks known to fawn about on the orchard-lined banks of the Sacramento River and mischievously wander through the hotel's banquet hall.
A head count on Sunday yielded an alarming discovery: Of the several dozen peacocks that make up the local flock, only four could be found on the hotel grounds.
Gandhi said that the estimated value of a male peacock - known for its fabulous, iridescent tail feathers - is $2,000, while a female peacock is valued at around $1,000.
Nielsen said he's concerned that the peacocks may have been stolen to be used in cockfights. 'That disturbs me highly and is really kind of hard to talk about,' he said, getting choked up.
