Wildfire evacuations are underway for two First Nations in northwest Ontario, with Deer Lake First Nation relocating its 1,300 residents to Toronto and Webequie First Nation evacuating approximately 400 vulnerable individuals to Barrie. The fires pose immediate danger, prompting leaders to declare states of emergency and prioritize the safety of residents. Local MPP Sol Mamakwa has called on the province for expedited support for evacuees and resources for wildland firefighters, emphasizing their critical role in safeguarding communities from ongoing fire threats. Recent wildfires have already affected other nearby communities as well.
Chief Cornelius Wabasse emphasized the situation by saying, 'We will continue to monitor the fire to determine if further evacuation is needed and will continue ongoing communications with residents.'
Sol Mamakwa, the local MPP, stated, 'It is vital that wildland firefighters are adequately staffed and resourced as they are on the frontlines protecting the residents of northern Ontario.'
