Ford's U.S. sales in May rose, driven largely by strong F-Series pickup sales, which increased by 14.9%. However, the company faced a significant setback in electric vehicle sales, especially with the F-150 Lightning, which saw a 41.7% drop to just 1,902 units sold. Ford CEO Jim Farley had ambitious plans for EV sales, targeting over 2 million units annually by 2026, but the current figures suggest these targets are unlikely to be met. Additionally, production of the Lightning will be paused until 2025 due to insufficient demand, casting doubt on Ford's EV future.
The Lightning sales were down 41.7% in May to 1,902. That means the company sold only 63 of these EVs a day, a significant underperformance.
Ford is on track to deliver more than 2 million electric vehicles annually by 2026, equal to about one-third of the company's global volume, but that goal now seems unachievable.
