Both J.D. Power and S&P Global Mobility estimate that October's EV market share plummeted to around 5% in the U.S., from a record high of over 12% in September. The battery-powered share of sales also dropped significantly on a year-over-year basis, from over 8% in October 2024. The last time EVs made up 5% of U.S. vehicle sales was in early 2022. According to S&P Global Mobility, some 64,000 new electric vehicles were sold in October.
Campaigners including Tanni Grey-Thompson have warned that disabled drivers are at risk of being locked out of the electric car transition because of inaccessible chargers. The former Paralympics champion and the Electric Vehicle Association England are pushing for the government to introduce standards to ensure chargers are easy to reach. The number of public chargers across the UK is rising rapidly, with 17,400 two an hour installed in the year to July. However, the lack of standards means that disabled drivers have often been unable to trust that they can use them.
For most of its short life, my Tesla Model 3 has aged beautifully. Since I bought the car, in 2019, it has received a number of new features simply by updating its software. My navigation system no longer just directs me to EV chargers along my route-it also shows me, in real time, how many plugs are free. With the push of a button, I can activate "Car Wash Mode," and the Tesla will put itself in neutral and disable the windshield wipers.
BMW has received over 3,000 orders for the new iX3 in Germany alone. The first deliveries in Europe are expected in the spring of 2026, with the U.S. following later in the summer. The BMW iX3 is built in an all-new factory in Hungary with a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year. BMW has poured all of its electric vehicle know-how into the upcoming iX3, making it its most advanced EV by far.
For The Verge's exclusive tour of these secretive labs, I watch researchers peer at cell chemistries down to the atomistic level, using electron microscopes. Others work at a larger scale, all the way up to the Megashaker. Inside a cavernous hall, an enormous sliding test chamber envelops one of GM's double-stacked, 205-kilowatt-hour battery packs - the type that powers hulking models like the Cadillac Escalade IQ.
Less than a month after the Long Island Expressway's Clean Pass program lapsed, some groups and lawmakers are trying to bring it back, saying commutes have gotten longer since electric vehicles got booted from the HOV lanes... About 48,000 Clean Pass vehicles lost their ability to legally use the high-occupancy vehicle lanes on Oct. 1 because the federal government did not renew permission for New York and 14 other states to grant exemptions for zero-emission vehicles in HOV lanes on federal highways. Currently, only carpoolers are able to use the HOV lanes.
Maserati is offering huge discounts for its electric cars. The Grecale Folgore electric SUV's rebate could buy you a well-maintained used Tesla Model 3. However, the electric GranTurismo and GranCabrio's discount is enough for a brand-new Model Y Premium All-Wheel Drive. Maserati isn't doing great, folks. Its global sales haven't stopped falling this year, with the Italian brand recording a 32% drop in sales in the first half, followed by another 19% decrease in the third quarter.
Do you know where all the parts on your car come from, and how they got there? And no, I don't mean "from" as in "America" or "Germany" or "South Korea." I mean, who made those parts, out of what, and how much energy did it really take to put that part onto your shiny new car? I certainly don't know that.
Exports of "new energy vehicles," including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, jumped 100% to 222,000 units in September, the industry organization said. That was slightly lower than the 224,000 units exported in August. China's EV makers have been increasingly looking abroad to markets such as Europe and Southeast Asia as overcapacity and price wars back home have pressured their profit margins. They invested more abroad than inside China last year, for the first time since 2014, the U.S.-based consultancy Rhodium Group said.
Barman will give attendees an insider's look at how Slate is reimagining the commercial EV market - from design to manufacturing - and share what it takes to build a next-generation vehicle company in one of the most capital-intensive industries on Earth. Expect an unfiltered conversation about the realities of hardware innovation, supply chain complexity, and startup-scale production, plus a live, in-person reveal of one of the year's buzziest new EVs.
One of the concepts that Toyota plans to unveil at the Japan Mobility Show this year is a futuristic (and likely fully electric) interpretation of a Corolla sedan. The car seems to advance the design language that we've already seen on Toyota's production models, but it's more angular and futuristic. It's definitely a Corolla because it says so on the back. Had it not had Corolla' lettering on its trunklid, you wouldn't know what it's meant to be because it looks nothing like today's model.
The Model 3 Standard starts at $36,990, while the Model Y Standard comes in at $39,990. While these are cheaper than the company's Premium offerings, many fans said that Tesla missed the mark with the pricing, as these numbers are not necessarily "affordable." At the very least, they will likely miss the mark in helping Tesla regain annual growth rates for its deliveries.
The Model S is among the most crucial developments in the automotive industry in the last century. Just as the Ford Model T made its mark on passenger transportation, becoming the first combustion engine vehicle to be successfully developed and marketed at a time when horse and buggy were the preferred mode of transportation, the Model S revolutionized things a step further.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a significant leap toward autonomous and sustainable transportation with the launch of the nation's first commercial fleet of self-driving electric trucks. The milestone, realised through a partnership between Evocargo, a developer of autonomous logistics solutions, and RAK Ceramics, one of the world's leading manufacturers of ceramics and sanitaryware, signals how automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and sustainability are converging to reshape the region's logistics sector.
Until October 1, the federal government offered a tax credit of up to $7,500 for the purchase of a qualifying new EV, and $3,000 for a qualifying used EV. In addition, there was a $7,500 incentive available for new EV leases. Those are now gone with the passage in July of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which sought to undo clean energy policies as part of a larger package of tax cuts and spending.
