Tesla has launched its first showroom in India, featuring the Model Y crossover which starts at approximately $70,000, significantly higher than in the U.S. The Indian version of the Model Y is imported from China. Competition will include luxury brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, making the luxury car market a challenge for Tesla. The showroom in Mumbai will also be complemented by a location in Delhi. There are currently no Superchargers, and initial deliveries of the Model Y variants are expected by the third quarter and later.
Tesla officially enters the Indian market, opening its first showroom today in Mumbai. The only model available is the Model Y, starting at roughly $70,000.
The base rear-wheel drive Model Y in India is priced $25,000 more than in the U.S., and a long-range version is priced at about $80,600.
With no Superchargers currently and a limited product lineup, Tesla's impact on global delivery numbers is expected to take time.
The Mumbai showroom opens today, with a second location in Delhi set to follow. Deliveries of the Model Y are expected to begin later this year.
