How Peg Rail, a Simple Shaker Storage Solution, Is Still Keeping Lives in Order
Briefly

Shaker peg rails, originally designed to clear space and organize rooms, continue to be favored in contemporary interiors for their functionality and aesthetic appeal. Typically hung at six feet, these simple wooden rails accommodate various items, including clothing, brooms, and decorative pieces. Frances Merrill from Reath Design emphasizes their seamless integration into modern spaces, advocating their use in diverse environments, from Southern California cabins to New York City bathrooms. This enduring design is recognized in the latest issue of Architectural Digest, highlighting its timeless relevance in organization and style.
"We're always looking for hooks, and when we use pegrail, they integrate seamlessly into a room," explains Frances Merrill, of the AD100 firm Reath Design, who has used it in mudrooms, closets, and bathrooms.
Like many Shaker designs, this one was likely governed by a set of Millennial Laws, which dictated how colors, stains, and varnish were applied.
Its primary intention was to free up space, whether for cleaning or when a room needed to be transformed for a different purpose.
The Shakers' peg rail storage solution is featured in AD's June issue.
