Digiday+ Research: Publishers identify the top trends among Gen Z readers

In Q2 2025, research found that Gen Z constitutes a minimal portion of readership for most publishers. Seventy-one percent indicated that Gen Z accounts for 0% to 25% of their audience, with only 29% noting a higher percentage. The trend of Gen Z expecting to consume news anytime and anywhere remains strong, according to 61% of publishers. Additionally, social media continues to play a significant role in delivering breaking news relevant to Gen Z, as noted by more than half of the surveyed publishers.
Digiday's survey found that Gen Z makes up a very small percentage of publishers' readership as of Q2 2025. Seventy-one percent of publisher pros told Digiday that Gen Z makes up between 0% and 25% of their audience.
Nearly two-thirds of publisher pros (61%) told Digiday in Q2 that Gen Z readers consuming news whenever they want, however they want is a trend that is still applicable for their audience.
More than half of publishers said that social media's role in delivering breaking news and covering topics that relate directly to Gen Z are still important trends for readers in this age group.
