A new iPhone variant, stripped of social media and web browsers, is available for parents concerned about their children's screen time. Offered by Sage Mobile in the UK for £99 a month, this device aims to promote real-life connections. Research indicates problematic smartphone use correlates with increased anxiety and depression in children. The phone's curated app store allows only essential apps. Previous use of a similar device in the US showed children engaging with it for significantly less time compared to typical screen usage, which averages three hours daily among youth aged 8 to 14.
Chris Kaspar, founder of Techless, highlighted the issue with typical smartphone defaults: "Right now they are selling cars without seatbelts. We want the defaults to be safe and healthy."
Research has shown that children with problematic smartphone use are twice as likely to experience anxiety and almost three times as likely to experience depression compared to those without addiction-like use.
