Ashland and Cherryland are unincorporated communities located between San Leandro and Hayward. They are often overlooked, prompting the county to commission a muralist to create a mural on an overpass to increase visibility. The communities were named for their historical cherry orchards and ash trees. Today, they face urban issues similar to other Bay Area communities. Local residents are proud of their identity and are eager for recognition as distinct communities within the larger East Bay region.
