The bombardment of Gaza by Israel resulted in the generation of at least 39 million tonnes of concrete debris between October 2023 and December 2024. The transportation and disposal of this rubble will require 2.1 million dump trucks driving 18 million miles, producing over 90,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers at the universities of Edinburgh and Oxford used remote sensing tools to analyze the conflict-related emissions, highlighting the need to account for the environmental costs of war. Their study is the most detailed on the carbon impact of debris management, addressing potential contamination from toxins and human remains.
The destruction of Palestinian homes, schools and hospitals in Gaza generated at least 39m tonnes of concrete debris that will require at least 2.1m dump trucks.
Clearing the rubble is comparable to driving 737 times the Earth's circumference, generating almost 66,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
