Antonio Guterres declared the fossil fuel era is dwindling while renewable energy reaches a positive tipping point. In 2024, 92.5 percent of all new electricity capacity globally came from renewables, showcasing significant growth. Last year, wind, solar, and other green sources accounted for 74 percent of the increase in electricity generation. Electric vehicle sales surged from 500,000 in 2015 to over 17 million in 2024. Renewables are increasingly favored, with $2 trillion invested in green energy last year, outperforming fossil fuel investments despite substantial subsidies for fossil fuels. The transition, however, still requires acceleration.
Antonio Guterres stated, "The fossil fuel age is flailing and failing. We are in the dawn of a new energy era, where cheap, clean, abundant energy powers a world rich in economic opportunity."
