"Redford got his start on Broadway in the late 1950s, drawing raves for the 1963 play Barefoot in the Park, before transitioning to film and TV. He instantly became a bona fide 1970s heartthrob after his breakout role in 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which kicked off a streak that included The Great Gatsby, The Way We Were, and The Sting, for which he landed an Oscar nod for Best Actor."
Robert Redford died Sept. 16, 2025, at age 89 at his home at Sundance in the Utah mountains, reportedly in his sleep. His family requested privacy. Redford moved from Broadway, including 1963's Barefoot in the Park, to film stardom with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and roles including The Sting. He won the Oscar for Best Director for Ordinary People, earned additional directing nominations, and received an honorary Oscar in 2002. He founded the Sundance Film Festival in 1984 and retired from acting in 2018, with The Old Man & the Gun as his final film and a cameo in Avengers: Endgame.
