"Seven years ago, San Francisco Giants President and CEO Larry Baer fell in love with Che Fico, then a new and buzzy California-Italian restaurant in the city's revitalized Western Addition neighborhood. At the time, chef and co-owner David Nayfeld didn't even know the CEO was at his restaurant, or that he enjoyed it so much. He only found out when a friend sent him a podcast where Baer said it was his favorite restaurant in San Francisco, according to Nayfeld."
"The next time the Giants executive came in, Nayfeld was ready for his encounter with the big wig ... or so he thought. He went over to introduce himself, but unbeknownst to him, Baer was even more at the ready. Baer was waiting for Nayfeld with a proposition that would completely alter the promising chef's future. "He said, 'David, I have to tell you. What you guys are doing here is so special,' Nayfeld recounted in an interview with SFGATE. "'We're doing a development right across from the ballpark, and I think you guys would be an incredible fit.'""
Larry Baer became an early admirer of Che Fico and later approached chef David Nayfeld with a proposal to join a major development across from Oracle Park. Nayfeld and co-owner Matt Brewer launched Via Aurelia as the anchor restaurant for Mission Rock, offering Tuscan-inspired fine dining with waterfront views of Oracle Park and the Bay Bridge. Via Aurelia opened weeks ago and has quickly made an impression as a potential destination restaurant. The restaurant is part of Back Home Hospitality’s expansion across the Bay Area and represents a significant step in Nayfeld’s career.
