Steam has purged numerous sex games featuring explicit content, particularly those with themes of sexual abuse, after introducing stricter moderation rules. The gaming platform attributed these changes to pressure from online payment processors, raising concerns among developers about potential censorship. The Collective Shout, an Australian anti-porn group, claimed responsibility for Steam's new policies, stating that the ban on hundreds of sexually violent games represents a victory for child safety advocates. They had previously pressured major payment platforms regarding profitability from harmful content on Steam.
"Hundreds of sexually violent online games that let players role-play rape, incest and the torture of women and children have been suddenly removed from the global gaming platform Steam," co-founder Melinda Tankard Reist wrote on X on July 19.
Collective Shout accused the payment platforms Visa, PayPal and Mastercard of profiting from violent pornography, leading to Steam's stringent moderation adjustments.
