The Nintendo Switch Refuses To Retire, And The PS2 Should Probably Be Nervous
"Switch 2 console following the release of Nintendo's financial results briefing today, its predecessor has continued to cement itself as Nintendo's best-selling console of all time with 155.92 million consoles sold as of March 31, 2026. That puts the Switch within spitting distance of Sony's PlayStation 2--currently the best-selling console of all time, with 160 million units sold as of March 31, 2024."
"To put all of this into perspective, 19.86 million Switch 2 consoles have been sold as of March 31, and the Switch has long surpassed the 154 million lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS. Nintendo is predicting that it'll sell fewer Switch 2 consoles in its second year on the market--around 16.5 million units according to its estimates--due to a wide variety of global factors."
"If Nintendo wants to beat that record, selling another 4-5 million Switch consoles isn't unfeasible given the long legs of its hardware, but several factors might prevent it from dethroning Sony as an all-time bestseller. The most obvious of these is a looming price hike, as it's not only the Switch 2 that will be more expensive later this year."
"Nintendo raised the price of all Switch console models late last year, and more price hikes have been announced for Japan, one of the markets where the Switch is at its strongest."
Switch has sold 155.92 million consoles as of March 31, 2026, making it Nintendo’s best-selling console and placing it close to PlayStation 2’s 160 million units sold as of March 31, 2024. Switch 2 has sold 19.86 million units as of March 31, and Switch has surpassed Nintendo DS lifetime sales of 154 million. Nintendo expects Switch 2 to sell about 16.5 million units in its second year due to global factors. PS2’s total was revised in 2024 after the final unit was manufactured. Nintendo could potentially beat the record by selling 4–5 million more units, but price increases and market conditions may limit that outcome.
