Germany: Train conductor dies after attack by passenger
"We are distraught and stunned but, most of all, we're angry,"
"We cannot accept that train conductors face life-threatening danger when starting their shifts."
"For years now, savings have been made at the expense of the security of train staff and passengers,"
"Many regional trains only have one conductor, and there's hardly ever security. How many more orgies of violence must we endure before something finally changes?"
A 36-year-old train conductor, Serkan C., was assaulted by a ticketless passenger during a routine ticket inspection near Kaiserslautern and died of his injuries 24 hours later. The alleged attacker, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and is being investigated on suspicion of manslaughter. Deutsche Bahn reports an average of five staff members are physically assaulted daily, with four more threatened. An EVG 2024 survey found eight in ten employees suffered verbal or physical abuse and 36% felt unsafe. The union demands more funding, team deployments, and security accompaniment despite DB offering voluntary body cameras and existing CCTV.
