Pat Farrell, a 72-year-old nun from the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, is preparing for her first weightlifting competition. She started lifting weights to combat muscle loss associated with aging. Currently training at The Yard gym in San Francisco, Farrell can lift 160 pounds, exceeding her body weight. She emphasizes the importance of staying active while representing a tradition of strong women in her community as they celebrate 175 years of service. Farrell encourages others, especially seniors, to engage in physical activity for health benefits.
"I typically people past 60 have started to lose a lot of muscle density, and so I read about that and started with dumbbells and stuff..."
"I like to think that I'm carrying on part of our tradition of 175 years... strong, intrepid women who have been engaged in mission and in service of others for the gospel."
