Surgeon who had his legs amputated and told insurers he had sepsis charged with fraud
Briefly

Neil Hopper, a vascular surgeon, faces fraud charges after claiming his amputated legs were due to sepsis. Accusations include false representation to insurers and encouraging others to inflict grievous bodily harm. He reportedly bought videos from The EunuchMaker website that depict limb removal, which facilitated the actions of the site's ringleader. Hopper, recognized for bravery following his amputations and pursuit of becoming an astronaut, has not practiced medicine since March 2023. He is scheduled to appear in court on two fraud counts and one count of encouragement related to bodily harm.
"I do quite a lot of amputations and the one thing that kept going around in my mind was power tools because you use power tools. The thought of power tools being used on me was icky. It was really weird."
Neil Hopper is accused of telling insurers that the leg injuries were the result of sepsis and were not self-inflicted, intending to make a gain.
Hopper has been charged with two counts of fraud by false representation, and a charge of encouraging or assisting in the commission of grievous bodily harm.
Between 21 August 2018 and 4 December 2020, Hopper bought videos from The EunuchMaker website showing the removal of limbs, which encouraged the ringleader to remove body parts of third parties.
