UN warns of surge in acute malnutrition among Gaza's young children
Briefly

The United Nations reports a worrying rise in severe malnutrition cases among children in Gaza, with over 2,700 under-fives diagnosed. The figure has tripled since February with a dramatic increase in hospital admissions due to complications. Despite treating over 16,500 children since January, the few available stabilisation centres are inadequate. The WHO has issued warnings about the overall health crisis in Gaza due to the ongoing starvation and resource scarcity affecting the entire population.
More than 2,700 children below the age of five in Gaza have been diagnosed with acute malnutrition, marking a steep increase since February.
The number of children with severe acute malnutrition requiring admission to hospital also increased by around double in May compared with earlier months.
Currently, there are only four stabilisation centres for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in the Gaza Strip, which is inadequate for the rising cases.
The WHO warned that the enclave's health system is collapsing, amid widespread starvation affecting the entire population.
