"Dangerous Animals" features Jai Courtney as a boat captain who feeds his victims to sharks while delivering philosophical musings. Directed by Sean Byrnes, the film adeptly builds suspense without excessive exploitation. Set in the isolated Coral Sea, the film provides a unique backdrop for terror, complete with quirky music choices that add depth to chilling scenes. A subplot involves a young couple navigating their feelings amidst imminent danger, further enhancing the narrative's emotional stakes. Overall, the film balances beautifully crafted visuals and horror elements, making it a notable entry in the genre.
One scene uses Steve Wright's "Evie (Part One)" - in which the singer begs his love to let her hair hang down - as the serial killer makes mementos out of his victims' hair.
The setting of a boat in the middle of the Coral Sea unlocks a delicious new home for terror. Sealable hatches and no one for miles means screaming is no good.
Dangerous Animals, thankfully, doesn't try to be more than it is, although the quite beautiful images of sharks sliding through the ocean show, naturally, that we are the species that inspired the fear.
Director Sean Byrnes has a super ability to build dread and his scenes are crisp without being exploitative.
