Brian McClair draws parallels between Manchester United's current squad and the team of the early 1990s, highlighting their potential for redemption through the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Both teams faced inconsistent domestic campaigns but found strength in European competitions. McClair recalls how the 1991 Cup Winners' Cup victory not only revived their season but propelled future successes. His reflections emphasize the importance of historical comparisons while acknowledging that contextual differences between eras make direct assessments challenging.
"I can understand comparisons between this current Manchester United team and our 1991 Cup Winners' Cup winning team with regard to not having the best domestic campaign and still reaching a European final," McClair tells FourFourTwo.
"It is very hard to really compare teams from different eras. We don't have the same level of information, TV coverage or stats and things for bygone eras that we do now."
