How a bipolar diagnosis benefits my research
Briefly

Imtiaz Zafar is a neuroscientist who researches bipolar disorder while also having experienced it personally. His condition worsened during his PhD, leading to psychosis, paranoia, and isolation. His mother’s depression, stemming from their father's death, created overwhelming pressure on him as a child. Zafar's professional goal is to develop a better understanding of bipolar disorder, which includes studying the effects of mood stabilizers at a molecular level using stem cells from patients. Zafar's work is driven by both a professional and personal mission to improve treatment options.
Zafar's professional journey transitioned from being a patient diagnosed with bipolar disorder to investigating treatments for the condition at a molecular level.
Experiencing psychosis and paranoia during his PhD, Zafar's mental health deteriorated, leading to severe isolation and suicidal thoughts.
