Tom Chapman, a barber in England, aims to bridge the gap between men and mental health resources after losing a friend to suicide. He trains stylists globally to recognize mental health symptoms and encourage conversations. Tim Grayburn's experiences reflect the struggles men face in expressing their feelings, particularly mental health challenges. Chapman formed the Lions Barber Collective in 2015 to raise awareness about suicide prevention through innovative methods such as hairdressing look books, which promote mental health conversations while supporting charity efforts to combat stigma.
"With men, mental health has been seen as a weakness for a long time, and therefore it's difficult to verbalize how you're feeling," he told me.
In the last decade, Chapman has become an international educator and author attempting to reduce mental health stigma and suicide, particularly among men.
He created a hairdressing 'look book,' a catalog of men's hair styles with messages about mental health to assist with starting conversations on the topic.
Chapman lost a friend to suicide in 2014, and, even without a psychology background, sought outlets to raise awareness about mental health.
