The pain is still there, but Ilona Luth and Patricia Gerstendorfer can laugh once again. Sitting together on two wooden chairs, they smile at each other. Their friendship is marked by a shared traumatic experience: Both lost loved ones to suicide. "I asked Patricia all the questions I didn't dare ask myself at the time," says Ilona. "Do I need therapy now? Can I continue working? Can I manage without medication? Patricia encouraged me to do what felt right."
When Ilona suddenly lost her husband to suicide six years ago, she was heading the customs department of a medium-sized company. Distracting herself with work helped her to bring a sense of normality back into her life, she recalls. Ilona quickly realized that she wouldn't be able to cope with her loss alone so she sought help. A neighbor told her about a support group in Berlin. There, she met Patricia, who's been the group's volunteer leader for over 10 years.

You just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and you will be able to get through it. Everything passes. This, too, shall pass. No matter what you're feeling, never lose hope."-Maurice Benard
Williams painted the index finger of his right hand teal and his ring finger purple - the colours of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. He adorned the middle finger with a suicide prevention ribbon. On his left hand, the index, middle and ring fingers sported the numbers 988. A sub-section of the national suicide crisis helpline, the LGBTQ+ Youth Specialised Service hotline, was shut down by the Trump administration in July under changes to the US federal budget.
A damning investigation found staff repeatedly missed opportunities to help Rajwinder Singh, 36, who took his own life 11 days after arriving at the south-west London prison in June 2023. The prison falsified records, ignored his call bell and did not check on him when his wife phoned with concerns for his welfare the day he died. A Prisons and Probation Ombudsman report said the prison "made critical and repeated failings in their duty of care to Mr Singh".
