Teenage vaping has turned a corner' in Australia, says Mark Butler, as data shows falling rates
Briefly

Vaping rates among 14-17 year olds in Australia fell from 17.5% to 14.6% in early 2023, indicating a possible peak in usage. The overall reduction for individuals aged over 15 was more than a third, with the 30-59 age group experiencing a 50% drop. These trends follow new vaping reforms aimed at limiting youth access. Despite these efforts, under-the-counter sales persist, contributing to a growing black market. More than 10 million illicit vapes were seized in 2024, valued at $500 million, as authorities enforce new restrictions.
Vaping rates fell from 17.5% at the start of 2023 to 14.6% in April this year among children aged 14-17 years, marking a significant decline.
The overall vaping rates for people aged over 15 reduced by more than a third, and those among the 30-59 age group dropped by about half.
The positive indications follow the July 2024 vaping reforms aimed at curbing youth access and reducing the social acceptability of vaping.
Despite the legal restrictions, experts warn of an explosion in black market trade due to the unaffordability of legal cigarettes and vape restrictions.
