Alice Coltrane was integral to the radicalism of her husband's late, gamechanging period from the masterpiece A Love Supreme onwards. Not only did they create a sense of stability from 1963 in raising a family and marrying, post his quitting heroin, but they were partners in spiritual and musical exploration.
Fenriz describes Pre-Historic Metal as 'a loose term,' stating, 'just figure it's our VIBE, our take on things and it's more a statement that we use old style to create something new.' He emphasizes their identity as metal with 'very loud guitars' and characterizes the music as 'frightfully barbaric but not without finesse.'
All but one of the song titles on Body Sound, the debut album from experimental string trio Whitney Johnson, Lia Kohl, and Macie Stewart, line up nicely-a few words, usually two, usually nouns, separated by a vertical line. The straight line in the middle means different things in different disciplines. In computing, it's called a 'pipe' and serves as a conduit. In poetry, it denotes a pause or break. In music, it marks the beginning and end of measures.
Songwriting is a difficult undertaking that gets harder and harder because you have to top your past work. You have to keep proving yourself. It's wonderful to sing 'Calendar Girl' and 'Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,' but you need more than that. You have to break new ground. As an artist, I have to choose what I feel is good and hope that the public will go along with it.
Olympia, WA's Some Velvet Sidewalk came up at the same time as Beat Happening and both were part of the sludgy, lo-fi "love-rock" indie scene there as well as being signed to K Records. Led by Al Larsen, SVS had a revolving membership in its 10-year run (1987-1997), including Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail, and made six albums before disbanding.
We like the idea of art as a tool for changing your perspective, being able to rotate ideas and see/hear/feel them from a different vantage point. Horse Lords' artistic philosophy centers on using their music to shift listener perspectives and explore ideas from multiple angles, reflecting their experimental approach to composition and performance.
The Ramones' first, self-titled album was released on April 23, 1976. It was recorded over seven days on the eighth floor of New York's Radio City Music Hall and cost $6,400 at the time—an almost laughably small amount compared with the big budgets common in the record industry then. Even so, it is considered one of the most influential albums in the history of popular music.
Metalachi takes the pumping, undeniable, brass-winded sounds and haunted soul of Mariachi and combines forces with metal songs. Out of Los Angeles, and composed of classically trained musicians, this isn't a schlock shop enterprise.
Recorded between Berlin and Baltimore, Demand to Be Taken to Heaven Alive! is the experimental rockers' first album to feature vocals, and follows 2022's Comradely Objects. It builds out Horse Lords' core lineup of Owen Gardner, Max Eilbacher, Sam Haberman, and Andrew Bernstein with bass clarinetist Madison Greenstone, trombonist Weston Olencki, and vocalists Nina Guo and Evelyn Saylor.
We're at the point in our career where we've been to a lot of fancy parties in beautiful rooms with important people, and we know the particular sadness of realizing it doesn't make you feel better. We've learned the hard way that validation is hollow and we actually just want connection.
Ora Cogan makes songs the way diviners cast charms. Her music moves on instinct but carries the deliberation of ritual, each gesture placed where feeling cuts closest to the bone. On Hardhearted Woman, her ninth album and debut for Sacred Bones, she casts an invocation for anyone determined to remain wild in a world where it's easier to calcify.
Pitchfork is honored to host one of our favorite bands- Mandy, Indiana-to kick off our inaugural reader Q&A series. Starting right now, you can post your questions for guitarist and producer Scott Fair, and synth player Simon Catling to talk about their outstanding record, Fair's solo project set dressing, or whatever else you want to ask them about the joys and difficulties of music, Manchester, and making art.
