NYPD probing detectives who worked security at house where man says he was tortured, AP source says
Briefly

New York City police are investigating two detectives linked to a kidnapping and torture case purportedly involving Bitcoin theft by two crypto investors. The inquiry centers on one detective's involvement in security detail, believed to have transported the victim to a townhouse where he was held. Both detectives are on modified leave while the investigation unfolds. The police department is looking into whether proper approvals for their off-duty work were obtained. Mayor Adams' office expressed disturbance regarding the allegations, emphasizing the expectation for all officers to adhere to the law, on and off duty.
It's not uncommon for members of the NYPD to do private security work outside of their city jobs but they need to receive prior approval.
Adams' office confirmed one of the detectives provides security detail for the Democrat, but said the mayor has no knowledge of what the officer does on his personal time.
Every city employee is expected to follow the law, including our officers, both on and off duty. We are disturbed by these allegations.
There is simply no way to have predicted the true actions that led to this unfortunate incident.
