Mayor Adams's announcement of a 15 mph speed limit for electric bikes has drawn harsh criticism, particularly from advocates who argue it unfairly targets delivery workers, many of whom are immigrants. Critics point out that the proposed rule will exacerbate congestion in bike lanes and create dangerous conditions between faster cars and slower e-bikes. Statements from experts highlight the disparity in regulation between e-bikes and more dangerous vehicles like SUVs, questioning the logic behind treating cyclists more harshly than reckless driving violations. The initiative has raised concerns about the lack of accountability for larger vehicles that cause significant harm.
This is an incredibly stupid idea, ... Imposing lower speed limits on e-bikes than on non-electric bikes would just lead to conflict and congestion in already-too-narrow bike lanes.
It's frankly insulting to consider speed limiters on an e-bike when we can't get speed limiters for repeat reckless drivers who are killing New Yorkers.
