Anthropic and OpenAI make moves against popular AI apps
Briefly

Recent actions by Anthropic and OpenAI signal escalating tensions in the AI sector, specifically impacting AI startups like Windsurf and Granola. Anthropic cut off access to Claude 3.x models for Windsurf with little notice, amid reports of OpenAI considering acquiring the company. Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan expressed concerns over the impact of these corporate strategies on the industry at large. Simultaneously, OpenAI introduced a new feature for ChatGPT that overlaps with Granola’s core functionality, further heightening competition in the AI app market.
With less than five days of notice, Anthropic decided to cut off nearly all of our first-party capacity to all Claude 3.x models... we are concerned that Anthropic's conduct will harm many in the industry, not just Windsurf.
We really are just trying to enable our customers who are going to sustainably be working with us in the future... I think it would be odd for us to be selling Claude to OpenAI.
OpenAI sent its own warning shot this week to the budding AI app ecosystem. It announced a record mode for ChatGPT - initially only for enterprise accounts - that transcribes calls and generates meeting notes.
