Delayed Red Hook Pool Opening Leaves Residents Frustrated
Briefly

The Red Hook Pool has closed for most of the summer due to a broken pipe discovered shortly before its June 27 opening. Repairs will take longer than initially expected, with the closure likely lasting until at least mid-August. The Parks Department stated that custom-made replacement parts are required. Local residents, including Alan Mukamal, have expressed dissatisfaction with the city's communication and lack of adequate alternatives for summer recreation, particularly during the ongoing heat waves.
The issue was discovered days before the pool was scheduled to open on June 27, as crews filled the basin with water. The Parks Department indicated that the broken pipe was 'pretty big,' making repairs complex.
A Parks Department spokesperson stated that the replacement parts for the broken pipe need to be custom-made, extending the closure of the Red Hook Pool at least through mid-August, despite being open only for a few weeks afterwards.
Alan Mukamal expressed frustration over the pool's closure, commenting on the lack of prior notification regarding the broken pipe despite regular inspections being conducted twice a year. He founded the Friends of the Red Hook Pool to address ongoing concerns.
As New York City experiences heat waves, the Parks Department has directed residents to alternative pools in neighboring areas, with many locals criticizing the limited communication and inadequate alternatives provided during the lengthy pool closure.
