The Broadwick Street facility was closed in 2021 due to repeated reports of sexual activity. A 25-year lease was reportedly agreed with Lift Coffee the year after, and a planning application was submitted in late 2024 to transform it into a cafe and events space.
"Shared stalls could result in less hygienic conditions than women typically experience in gender-specific restrooms, especially because men are used to using urinals rather than toilets," White said in a petition, which had 172 signatures on Friday.
"There is an urgency," said Navaratnam. "The federal funding, provincial funding and even the city land is conditional on the fact that the community is going to come together and help build this public facility for us."
