Man in notorious NYC hammer attack gets up to life in prison
Briefly

William Blount, 61, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the violent robbery and assault of 57-year-old Nina Rothschild in February 2022. Blount was found guilty of first-degree assault and robbery after attacking Rothschild at a subway station, fracturing her skull. The attack, described as unprovoked, drew national attention and was captured on surveillance video. Blount assaulted Rothschild with a hammer and stole her belongings. Rothschild is still recovering from her injuries but appeared in court for the sentencing.
'This was an unprovoked attack that caught the attention of the entire country,' Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. 'Our transit system must be safe for everyone and this conviction sends a strong message that those who cause mayhem on our subways will be brought to justice.'
I kept yelling stop, stop, stop, which of course was completely and utterly useless,' she recalled. 'I kept calling 'Help, help, help, help!' And fortunately two NYPD officers came up.'
