Activists held vigils on Third Avenue and Canal Street to demand safety improvements from Mayor Adams following fatal crashes at both locations. Residents of Sunset Park called for a plan to narrow Third Avenue, emphasizing the need for children's safety when crossing the street. Adams halted proposed road diet plans due to local business pushback. At Canal Street, where two fatalities recently occurred, a family member of a victim urged the city to act, highlighting a history of deaths at that intersection and the urgency to protect vulnerable road users.
Mathilde, a resident at the rally, emphasized, "We need this street to be safer for all of our children. No one should have to be worried that their children are going to get hit by a car, just trying to cross the street."
Elizabeth Adams, deputy director for public affairs at Transportation Alternatives, stated, "It's unconscionable to drag your feet on proven street safety measures when you know that they work."
Sarah Witt, whose brother was killed on Canal Street, remarked, "Twelve people have died at this intersection and it's time for the city to protect its cyclists, its elderly and all of its residents."
Witt also added, "Kevin always loved New York City. He loved biking this city and he would want it to be safe for all."
