Brave browser version 1.81 will block Microsoft Recall from capturing screenshots by default, aiming to enhance user privacy protection. Recall, introduced in May 2024, records user screen activity to assist with Copilot+ AI function. Although initially criticized for privacy violations, Microsoft delayed the introduction and transitioned Recall to an opt-in basis with improved local data protections. Brave Software argues that, despite these changes, Recall still poses a risk to privacy, necessitating its default disabling to safeguard user history, particularly in sensitive situations.
Recall repeatedly captures images of the user's screen and stores the snapshots, allowing that data to be resurfaced on-demand through local image recognition and natural language queries.
Despite modifications, Brave Software argues that Recall remains a risk as it contradicts the principles of a privacy-first browser, thus necessitating the default disabling of its capabilities.
Disabling Recall in Brave is considered essential to protect user browsing history, ensuring that sensitive activities do not unintentionally accumulate in databases vulnerable to misuse.
Brave VP of privacy and security highlighted the importance of preventing browsing history from inadvertently entering a persistent database, due to potential misuse in very sensitive situations.
