"For too long, I think we've treated this as inevitable,"
"We do have a body of science that can inform and reduce the burden of injuries from firearm violence,"
"That's still necessary for public safety purposes. But you need to invest in programs that prevent violence."
"Firearm harm is a symptom of deeper structural issues when you think about poverty and segregation and trauma and lack of opportunity,"
In the past 25 years, the United States has experienced more than 800,000 deaths from gun violence and over two million injuries. Firearm violence is now the leading cause of death among children and teens, while most firearm deaths occur among adults; nearly 60% of firearm injury deaths are suicides. Sixty leading experts from medicine, public health, criminology, law, and technology propose a roadmap aiming to reduce the human toll by 2040. Recommended actions include laws that ensure appropriate screening to keep guns out of the hands of people with histories of violence, investment in community-based prevention programs alongside necessary criminal enforcement, and addressing socioeconomic inequalities such as poverty, segregation, trauma, and lack of opportunity.
