Personal care and beauty products sold in the U.S. lack significant federal regulation, exposing consumers to numerous harmful chemicals. An average adult uses about 12 products daily, leading to contact with approximately 168 different chemicals that can cause serious health issues. Women of color, who often use more products, are particularly affected. In response, a group of Democratic lawmakers introduced the "Safer Beauty Bill Package," aimed at updating outdated cosmetics laws and enhancing safety regulations to protect vulnerable populations. The legislation follows the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act, which expanded FDA's regulatory authority on cosmetics.
"More than 10,000 chemicals are used to make beauty and personal care products. We owe it to consumers to ensure the beauty and personal care products they use daily are safe."
"Despite mounting scientific research into the dangers posed by toxic chemicals, little has been done to ban them or at least label them on cosmetics."
