Council members aren't thrilled with unique building
"I don't love the exterior, but that's me,"
"I'm not an architect, so I don't know what that looks like, but I will know it when I see it,"
"I don't like the idea of being able to buy open space. That should be prohibited,"
Palo Alto council members reacted lukewarmly to a proposed 75-foot retail and housing building at 414 California Ave., located where Bank of the West was and between the Cobblery and Country Sun Natural Foods. The design takes architectural inspiration from baskets woven by Muwekma Ohlone and was presented by architect Zoltan Pali. Several council members criticized the exterior and questioned its fit within California Avenue as the city reimagines the area after the street closure. Council members objected to rooftop decks being limited to certain residents and rejected selling open space. A Country Sun resident raised concern that building to the property line could block a beloved mural. The council provided feedback without making final decisions.
