Starbucks takes aim at remote work, says some employees may need to relocate to headquarters
Briefly

Starbucks is enforcing a four-day in-office requirement for corporate employees, up from three, beginning in early October. The company mandates that all 'people leaders' must relocate to Seattle or Toronto within a year. Although individual employees under these leaders won't need to move, future hires will be required to be based in these cities. Those who decline to relocate may opt for a voluntary exit program with a cash payment. The decision reflects a trend of companies pushing for in-person collaboration.
"We are reestablishing our in-office culture because we do our best work when we're together. We share ideas more effectively, creatively solve hard problems, and move much faster," Niccol wrote in the letter.
Starbucks Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol stated that corporate employees would need to be in the office four days a week starting in early October instead of three.
The company said that all corporate 'people leaders' must be based in either Seattle or Toronto within 12 months.
Affected workers who choose not to relocate will be eligible for a one-time voluntary exit program with a cash payment.
