Ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Doha broke down, with U.S. officials deciding to withdraw after concluding Hamas was not genuinely pursuing peace. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff indicated that Hamas's responses demonstrated a lack of commitment to reaching a ceasefire amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza. Previous efforts, including a proposed 60-day truce during Prime Minister Netanyahu's visit to Washington, failed to produce results. Witkoff expressed disappointment with Hamas's actions and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to achieving lasting peace in the region.
"We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza," Witkoff wrote in a statement published to X.
"While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith."
"It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way," Witkoff added in Thursday's announcement.
"We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza."
