Bay Area restaurant known for 5-pound burrito is closing after 3 decades
Briefly

Iguanas, a beloved San Jose Mexican restaurant known for its Burritozilla and orange Zilla sauce, is permanently closing on July 27 after over 30 years in business. The restaurant originally opened in 1994 and at its peak had six locations. Recently, it closed its East San Jose and Santa Clara locations, with the Texas branch closing earlier this spring. The original owners clarified that new owners of the Santa Clara location do not represent their brand. The Iguanas Burritozilla became popular on the Food Network show "Man v. Food" in 2009.
Today, we announce our retirement, a major milestone for our family," read an Instagram post from Iguanas in early July. "We're still working out the final details, but we wanted to share this news early so you have plenty of time to stop by, share a meal, and swap stories. We'd love to see you, reconnect, and say thank you in person!"
Rather than create - the new owners decided to try and imitate, the original owners wrote in a post intended to clarify customers' confusion. "Not our Brand. Not our Food. Not our Family."
For San Jose students, conquering this giant burrito is a rite of passage that grants campuswide bragging rights to the few who finish," Richman said in the episode. "This burrito is taller than a toddler."
