Biotech Startup Cirkular Makes History: First Fish Fed on Mycoprotein Hits the Market, Paving the Way for Circular Aquaculture
"This milestone proves that our technology is not only robust but commercially viable. With a validated process and a first product in the market, we are now moving towards full-scale biomanufacturing,"
"Circular base ingredients will - and must be - the foundation of tomorrow's industries. There is no alternative."
Cirkulär, a Swedish biotech founded in 2019, has launched the first commercially available fish raised on mycoprotein produced from industrial sidestreams. Two years of pilot fermentation in southern Sweden validated a reliable, cost-effective, scalable production process and produced a market-ready feed ingredient. The company plans to build a full-scale biomanufacturing facility to replace soy and wild-caught fishmeal in aquaculture supply chains. Investors include MBP Solutions and notable industry figures supporting expansion. The mycoprotein ingredient offers potential applications in pet food, human nutrition, personal care, and agricultural biostimulants while enabling closed-loop, resilient supply chains.
